Plane Crashes at Thunder Over Michigan Air Show; 2 people parachute from a jet plane

A plane crashed Sunday at the Thunder Over Michigan air show, officials said. The event was held as part of the Air Show’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

Two people parachuted from a MiG-23 fighter jet south of Willow Run Airport and landed in Lake Belleville, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Van Buren Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara said the occupants of the plane were being treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

The plane crashed into the parking lot of an apartment building in Belleville, hitting unmanned vehicles, the Wayne County Airport Authority said.

“The pilot and rear seat were successfully ejected from the aircraft prior to the crash,” the authority said. “Although they did not sustain any significant injuries, first responders transported the pair to a nearby hospital as a precaution.”

McNamara said no one on the field was injured.

The Thunder over Michigan said in a Facebook post that there were “circumstances” that called for the show to be called off. People were asked to go to their vehicles and leave the airport “quietly”.
